This month, the Rotaract Club at the United Nations welcomes Mark Lowery, Assistant Director at the Office of Climate Change within the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, for a one of a kind discussion on New York State's Plan to fight climate change. [REGISTRATION]
Sea level rise due to climate change has long been a cause of concern for New York City. According to a Lower Manhattan Coastal Resilience survey, 37% of lower Manhattan will be at risk for storm surges by 2050. By 2100, sea levels could rise by as much as six feet, scientists say.
Face to the threat of climate change, New York State enacted the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act (Climate Act). New York State’s Climate Act is the among the most ambitious climate laws in the world and requires New York to reduce economy-wide greenhouse gas emissions 40 percent by 2030 and no less than 85 percent by 2050 from 1990 levels. The law creates a Climate Action Council charged with developing a scoping plan of recommendations to meet these targets and place New York on a path toward carbon neutrality.
Join us on December 9, 2021 to meet Mark Lowery, appointee to the Climate Action Council and to the Local Government Advisory Panel. Mark authored the adaptation and resilience chapter of the Council’s scoping plan. During our meeting, Mark will present the Climate Act and will answer our questions on how will New York fight Climate Change. Don’t miss this event!
The meeting will again be on a hybrid format with our physical location in the Upper East Side at 1901 First Avenue, New York, NY 10029. [REGISTRATION]
