On June 17, 2022, we will celebrate our accomplishments this year and formally end the year with members and friends.

In addition, and in honor of Goal #13, we will be donating money to Waterfront Alliance.

Fundraiser: Raising Money to Fight Climate Change

Waterfront Alliance supports resilient, revitalized, and accessible coastlines for all communities. Waterfront Alliance’s work could not be more critical. By 2100, the New York City region faces as much as six feet of sea level rise. Storms will intensify and heat waves will be longer and hotter. Waterfront works to reduce the risks we face from the climate crisis and ensure our region is resilient for future generations.

Their focus is on increasing waterfront accessibility for all, along with efforts to advocate for a working waterfront that is a vital source of business activity and educating the next generation of waterfront stewards. Ultinately Waterfront Alliance's long-term focus is a well-adapted and resilient New York Harbor.

Our contribution to Waterfront Alliance can support programs serving environmental justice and higher-need communities. This year’s focus is on climate change and resilience – help us fight Climate Change and make New York more resilient by donating today.

MORE ABOUT WATERFRONT ALLIANCE:

The following includes a summary of Waterfront Alliance’s four primary programs:

  1. Estuary Explorers: Through Estuary Explorers, Waterfront Alliance’s hands-on waterfront lab and accompanying STEM-based curriculum, students from underserved and environmental justice communities apply the scientific method to their local shorelines. The program pairs experiential education at community waterfronts with lessons in the classroom to enrich students’ understanding of marine ecology, water quality, estuarine geography, sea level rise, and climate change. The program is adaptable for students grade 4–12, and teaches scientific skills to measure and analyze data, including salinity, pH, water temperature, and permeable and impermeable surfaces.

  2. Rise to Resilience Coalition: The Rise to Resilience Coalition, a campaign spearheaded by the Waterfront Alliance, includes more than 100 organizations building support for bold, inclusive, community- and evidence-based climate action from policy and lawmakers at every level of government. The coalition collectively calls on federal, state, and local governments to make climate change resilience an urgent priority by passing laws and developing policies and major programs. The coalition depends on local community and neighborhood voices, perspectives, input, insights, and expertise for its work. Our power is in our numbers and relationships to decision makers. Together we will continue to drive systemic change and ensure equity for the region’s most climate-vulnerable communities.

  3. Eliminating Barriers to Waterfront Access: There are significant physical and social barriers that prevent people in our region from enjoying and using their waterfronts, beaches, and coastlines. In recent years, progress has been made to provide better waterfront access and stewardship opportunities to the region. Yet physical and social barriers to waterfront access persist, particularly in lower-income communities of color. Physical barriers include active prevention through fencing and barriers, aging infrastructure, hardened shorelines, and lack of funding. Social barriers are ingrained in our society and systemic processes for waterfront decision-making. To secure access for all, unused publicly owned waterfronts need to be retrofitted for recreation, policies and priorities must prioritize access, and we need to ensure that underserved communities have a stronger voice in decisions about waterfront access and development. We also need to ensure that we design our waterfront public spaces to be nature-based and resilient for generations to come.

  4. WEDG® (Waterfront Edge Design Guidelines): WEDG is the answer for how to develop coastlines that address climate uncertainty due to sea level rise, increased storm intensity, and urban heat island effects. Other credit-based ratings systems (LEED®, Envision®, SITES®) are examples of successful sister ratings systems. While these ratings systems complement WEDG, WEDG is the only rating system specifically designed for coastal resilience and the unique challenges and opportunities waterfront projects face. WEDG consists of three major components: WEDG Verification, WEDG policy, and WEDG Professionals. In 2022, the Waterfront Alliance will: increase the number of projects verified by WEDG; embed WEDG into financial institutions green lending requirements; change municipal and state policy to require and/or incentivize WEDG Verification for coastal and waterfront projects; increase the number of WEDG verified professionals; and explore options to offer the WEDG course as a self-paced professional development online series.
