[POSTPONED] Volunteering Event with Impulso Project - Power to the Period

  • 216 East 45th Street New York, NY, 10017 United States (map)

[This event has been postponed, stay tuned!]

Join us on TBD at 7PM for a volunteering event with The Impulso Project.

We will be working together to make menstrual pads to help those in San Felipe, Guatemala who are faced with "period poverty".

According to the World Bank,  500 million women and girls throughout the world lack access to products for menstrual hygiene management. This means 25% of all girls and women experience “period poverty”, an inability to access or afford products such as pads, tampons, or liners to manage menstrual bleeding. A small pack of pads can be the price of a daily salary. Without access to proper resources and menstrual education, 1 in 10 girls in developing countries have no choice but to stay home from school during their periods. 20% of girls in developing countries often drop out of school completely once they begin their menstrual cycles. Feminine hygiene products are often unavailable but many times are simply unaffordable. A small pack of pads can be the price of a daily salary.

Rotaract and The Impulso Project are trying to help keep girls in school with The Power to the Period Project. By helping to educate girls about their menstrual cycle and providing them with reusable sanitary pads, we hope girls will gain confidence during their “time of month” and be able to attend school and engage in other daily activities. The goal is to make 500 reusable pads for distribution in San Felipe, Guatemala, a village that has partnered with The Impulso Project on various projects in the past. The distribution will be paired with education workshops on menstruation as well as workshops in which girls will be given the materials and skills to make their own reusable pads, a possible micro business for those interested.

Please join us on April 5th to help make pads and help to ensure young girls in San Felipe can remain in school.
